Fun Facts About Solar Energy

No Parts, No Problem

Solar panels have no moving parts. This means they require minimal maintenance and can last for 25–30 years.

Solar = More Home Value

Solar panels can increase a home's value by up to 4%. They also reduce monthly electricity bills significantly.

Why Are Panels Blue?

The cells making up the panel are coated in blue, as darker colours absorb more light, which helps the panels work more efficiently.

Cloudy? Still Works!

Solar panels work even on cloudy days. They can still generate up to 25% of their normal power output during overcast conditions.

Cold = More Power

Solar panels actually work better in cold weather. Cool temperatures increase their efficiency in converting sunlight to electricity.

From Sugar to Solar

The Brechin Castle Solar Facility in Couva is built on a former sugar estate, representing Trinidad and Tobago's shift from traditional to renewable energy.

Power for 31,500 Homes

The Brechin Castle solar farm is expected to power around 31,500 homes every year.

Cleaner Air for T&T

The Brechin Castle Solar Facility helps reduce Trinidad and Tobago's carbon emissions, showing how industrial sites can be transformed for renewable energy.

Solar Jobs in T&T

The Brechin Castle Solar Facility creates local jobs in renewable energy, supporting both environmental sustainability and economic growth.

Sun = Energy

Solar energy is over 4.5 billion years old. Our sun has been providing energy since the formation of our solar system.

Power That Won't Run Out

Solar energy is completely renewable and will be available for billions of years. It's one of the cleanest power sources available.

1 Hour of Sun = 1 Year of Power

The sun provides more energy in one hour than the entire world uses in one year.

Solar in Space

Solar power has been used in space since 1958. Satellites and space stations rely on solar energy for their operations in orbit.

Sunlight Powers Earth

Every hour, enough sunlight reaches Earth to power the entire planet for a year, making solar our most abundant natural resource.

Solar Saves Trees

Using solar energy for one home has the same impact as planting 150 trees, significantly reducing carbon footprint.

Big or Small, Solar Works

Solar energy can power everything from calculators to entire cities. The technology is scalable from tiny devices to massive power plants.

Fast Solar Cars

Solar-powered cars can travel up to 60 mph, demonstrating the potential of solar energy in transportation.

First Solar Panel

The first solar cell was invented in 1883. Modern solar panels are over 100 times more efficient than those early designs.

About Brechin Castle Solar

The Brechin Castle Solar Farm is the first big solar energy project in Trinidad and Tobago! Built by bp, Shell, and NGC, with help from Lightsource bp, it's located in Couva and uses sunlight to make electricity for over 40,000 homes.

The solar farm helps keep the air clean by reducing pollution and makes a big difference in protecting our planet. The project also creates jobs for people in nearby communities, supports the country's shift to clean energy, and teaches everyone about the importance of using green power for the future!
